In the beginning, the strategy at Painted Rock was to specialize on classic Bordeaux style reds and Chardonnay. Syrah was a late addition, but has quickly become one of the defining wines of the estate and the Okanagan. A permanent fixture in the gold medal winners at each year’s InterVin Wine Awards, Syrah from this immaculate vineyard perched over Skaha Lake in Penticton calls forth the variety’s unique fragrance and power. The newly released 2014 Syrah ranks as the best yet. The wine was aged 18 months in a mix of French (80 percent) and American oak barrels, 30 percent new. The peppery and floral aromas and complex herbal, spice and ripe fruit on the palate make a profound first impression, but decanting or bottle age will reveal more layers and intrigue.
